I have recently moved to the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. I will be regularly updating my website galleries with photographs of Welsh wildlife from my local area and beyond.

Usk Valley – Brecon Beacons National Park

An initial walk down to the local Usk river showed me I had definitely made the right choice. The river itself is beautiful but the rocks and trees projecting from the river bed provide plenty of habitat for local wildlife. On the first day alone, I saw grey wagtails, herons, buzzards, a kingfisher, a couple of young dippers and many invertebrates such as pond skaters and related insects.

I’m very much looking forward to filling this gallery with images from the Usk valley.

Skomer Island

I have also been a bit further afield, to Pembrokeshire and in particular Skomer Island. For those in the know, Skomer Island is an incredibly popular place for birdwatchers in the summer months particularly for the puffins which bring up their chicks in the burrows on the island, before heading out to the sea for the winter. The puffins, and most of the other birds for that matter, had already left Skomer island by the time we arrived. That’s not to say it was a wasted journey at all. The seal pups were very active and the seal colonies very noisy. The warden pointed out one seal pup that had been born the previous day, and it struck me the size difference between that one and another that was only a few days old.
